Weary of the Sure Thing

Posted November 1st, 2007

I have a confession. One of my guilty pleasures is blooper videos. Particularly, I like America’s Funniest Home Videos. And I’m not sure why I like that particular flavor of blooper videos the most, but I have a feeling that they get such a wide selection of videos to choose from that they really can afford to cull only the best ones. As for the voice overs from Bob Saget, I could take ‘em or leave ‘em. But the sound effects do make me chuckle from time to time. Favorite feature: 30 in 30. Sometimes they’ll do 30 hits in 30 seconds or a variation on that theme. It kills me. Here’s a bicycle montage sort of in that vein.

I’m not sure exactly what it is about these videos that makes me just sit and laugh. It’s not that other people are getting hurt. I think it has something to do with having no idea what’s coming up. Even if you see someone carrying a wedding cake in one of these takes, you know they are going to drop it, but you don’t know if they are going to faceplant in it, if it’s going to catch on fire or if they will just fall down a flight of stairs with it.

As much as I love the spontaneous and unpredictable nature of blooper videos, I spend a lot of time and energy calculating risk. I go to a lot of trouble trying to make sure my real life isn’t full of too many surprises. I don’t know that it’s a bad thing. But it is taxing and when it comes to big decisions, it can be downright paralyzing.

And we all have different thresholds of risk. It feels pretty risky to me to jump out of an airplane. But to some people, leaving the house feels like a risk. There’s a pretty wide range of risk in between those to things that can be pretty healthy for most of us to explore.

Don’t just wait for your world to change. Do something that will change your world today. Let me encourage you to stop just pursuing the sure thing and risk a little. Take advantage of the amazing planet we live on.

In the meantime, watch this:
