Read the Manual

Isn't the point of the iPhone that you don't have to be a genius to use it? If you can't figure it out from the manual I don't think this big book will help.

Myspace is Down But Not Out: The Reason a Musician Can’t Leave Yet

Posted November 9th, 2007

I’m so sick of Myspace spam. Seems like about every 3rd friend request is a spammer these days. And I’m also getting a barrage of message spam seemingly from trusted friends, but with poorly compressed spam image files instead of messages.

I don’t even know how my friends are getting their profiles hacked. Of if they know.

So why don’t I just ditch Myspace and move exclusively to one of the dozens of other sites with less spam and more usability? I have a Virb.com account. That’s nice. I also am set up on Facebook which I like more each day.

But no. I can’t leave Myspace yet. Here’s the main reason:

It appears that I will always have more contacts on Myspace than Facebook.

As a musician, that is pure gold. Personally, I’d rather play around on Facebook, but there is value in having 408 contacts with people I don’t know at myspace on the off-chance someone will check out my music. On Facebook, most of the people who have “friended” me already know what I do.

Facebook is more formal. Myspace friends come out of the woodwork. They show up like lost puppies. You don’t know where they came from and you really don’t care. They are little more than a notch on your Myspace belt and they most likely just added you so they could get a notch in theirs. Conversely, I’ve tried to make friends with strangers on Facebook and they don’t confirm (I don’t think my profile pic is that scary). With Facebook, you are in or you are out. It’s almost as exclusive as Linked In when it comes to making contacts. On Myspace, the opportunities to meet new people are limitless. It’s built into the culture of the site.

There is power in numbers. I heard someone say yesterday that a primary rule of sales is “the more contacts you make, the more sales you will make.” The figure is correlative. I completely understand that. In fact, I wrote a long discourse on my other blog about the importance of reaching the people who will potentially like what you do. For the musicians, particularly the unknown indie musicians, Myspace is great for this reason. I have made several hundred contacts with “friends” on Myspace that I’d otherwise never have happened upon. I’m sure many artists have seen that truth play out and so they remain on Myspace, in spite of the myriad frustrations.

Interesting side note: I was thinking the other day: have I ever made a REAL friend on Myspace? To be honest, there are actually a handful of people I’ve corresponded with who don’t seem too scary to meet in real life. I’d call them a friend. I actually met someone who plays the bagpipes and lives in the area. Was able to refer her to a friend IRL and she played on that friend’s recording project. True story.

Anyway, for all my whining and complaining about the problems with Myspace, I can’t seem to let go. Not just yet anyway. Perhaps something will change that will make networking with strangers more natural on Facebook. We’ll see…

By way of context, this came from the Technorati.com booth. And by way of more context, if you didn’t know, Technorati is the go-to search engine for blogs and blog popularity.
