Melodyne DNA (Direct Note Access)

This is pretty amazing. If this works as well as it appears to, it is, in fact, pretty revolutionary. I’m so baffled about how this is actually possible. By the way, the announcer is talking about “midi,” not something “meaty.”

Here’s the Melodyne Page.

That’s some crazy sh*t. I will definitely be purchasing this so that I don’t ever have to play an instrument again… I’ll just drag and drop to my heart’s content!

Beethoven’s Fifth can easily be rearranged into “Smells Like Teen Spirit!”

Very cool stuff! Thanks for sharing this info with us musician-geek types.

BTW, if your dream keyboard (the Roland RD-300gx) ever starts to look like it may become more of a reality, I would be more than happy to help you acquire one from Prosound Music here in Colorado Springs. (I work there on Saturdays.) I concur with your assessment about its being a very nice candidate for live performance — I’ve tried both the RD-300 and RD-700, and like them both for that purpose, especially their realistic, very piano-like, weighted action. (The big, heavy, full-featured Fantoms can serve as stage keyboards, but are more oriented toward workstation recording use.) Anyway, I’m really enjoying your music, your site and podcasts, and your interaction with my son, Jon. Keep up the good work!

Wow! I should say that this is incredible. But I’m staggering at the fact that the old genius kept after it to break the theory barrier. I think this is useful mainly for re-mixers and folk that don’t have access or knowledge of playing other instruments. And maybe even for the guy who has little budget for recording and must correct the oops note made by stress and cost to time ratio. Fascinating yes but could cause the dumbing down of musical performance and dedication to the craft. In other words. Would you want a chord that you could spend 50hrs chopping into a sweet riff or do you want a skilled performance layed down by a guy who has paid his dues. Jurassic Park, Stem Cells now this!
